I can honestly say it was the best week I’ve had in a very long time. In fact, I’ve talked about it so much since coming home that my husband keeps joking he’ll send me back just to get some peace! If I could, I’d be back in a flash, so that’s not much of a threat…
Of course, Calvert Kielder is set in one of the most beautiful places you could imagine, but what really makes it special is the people. Every single member of staff helped make the week unforgettable. From the activity instructors and care team to the office staff and housekeeping team, everyone made me feel so welcome and cared for.
And I definitely can’t forget Mark and Geoff in the kitchen! I joked that I wanted to take them home with me. The food was so delicious.
I honestly couldn’t fault a single thing about my stay. Spending time outdoors in the woods, whether quietly on my own or taking part in activities with the group, was exactly what I needed. I also loved getting to know the other guests and chatting with the carers and activity team. Every day brought something new, and every day left me smiling.
One thing I didn’t quite manage was stargazing… Every evening I was so happily worn out from the day’s adventures that I ended up heading straight to bed instead. Maybe that’s just another reason I’ll have to come back!
The week gave me a real boost, and I’m already hoping I can arrange another visit. Whether it’s a planned break or even a last-minute cancellation, I’d jump at the chance to return.
I’ve also been telling everyone I know about Calvert Kielder and can’t wait to share my experience with disability groups on social media. If my story helps someone else discover what an incredible place this is, then that’s something I’d be really proud of.
